Center for Survivors of Torture in coordination with the National Partnership for community training is hosting nationally recognized experts in the torture treatment field from the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma and the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture for a two day training for mental health practitioners on March 6th and 7th.The Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Office of Immigration and Refugee Affairs is a co-sponsor of this significant event.
Registration is full with over 160 professionals attending the training that will include workshops from Jim Lavelle, LICSW from the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma (HPRT), and Dr. Hawthorne Smith, from the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture (PSOT). Jim Lavelle co-founded the Indochinese Psychiatry Clinic (IPC), one of the first clinical programs for refugees in the United States, and will speak regarding screening tools. Dr. Smith is the Clinical Director of the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture and will discuss the social and emotional effects of torture and how to provide group treatment for torture survivors.
In addition, local expert, Dr. Karin E. Montero, from Center for Survivors of Torture, will discuss medical interviewing. Ms. Edna Yang from American Gateways will provide information regarding the asylum process. Dr. Benjamin Warner will discuss optimal clinical care.
